Recipe: Hot Toddy!

Internet, I am packing for Chicago, getting your camp post ready for tomorrow, and kind of having a cold. So I thought I'd share my favorite recipe for feeling better in winter weather: the hot toddy. This is your standard recipe, with the addition of Chinese loose tea, always in abundant supply here at Chao Camp, and red pepper flakes -- an inspired addition from Grub Report's Dr. Mathra -- which is probably the most important ingredient here. The tea supplies much-needed caffeine; the pepper flakes provide the toddy with a major kick, and also encourage endorphin release. As a wise Mellencamp once noted, "Hurts so good."

The first few camp dates and locations will be announced very very soon, so stay tuned for exciting camp-related developments. In the meantime, go hot toddy yourself to death.

Don't you mean: "[...] go hot toddy yourself to health."?

Oh, Bulleit all the way! Hot Toddies are the only bright spot in having a cold. I think I will make a preventative one tonight.

Wow, what a good idea to add the tea and red pepper flakes! My hot toddy usually includes whiskey, lemon, hot water and cloves - sometimes I do lime and spiced rum instead. Every once in a while maple syrup instead of honey - and then I change

I'm sorry to be a bother, but I was hoping to get the dates for the LA camp this week. It's the first one on the list and I need to get my January plans finalized.

I agree! There's something just so perfect about a hot toddy. I had my first one at 18 in college when I was coming down with a cold but determined to go out to dinner since my friend's parents were in town. Despite being at a Mexican restaurant with pitchers of margaritas on the table, my friend's mom took one look at me, said, "I know what you need!" and ordered me hot tea with a shot of bourbon. Best medicine ever.

Dang, this is good! I just made myself a cup with Lapsang Souchong, a smoky tea, and cayenne for heat instead of the red pepper flakes. It's purrrfect on this cold and rainy day when I am not feeling so hot. I've used Lapsang Souchong before in a simple syrup with bourbon cocktails. This smoky tea and bourbon are perfect together.
