Your Friday Cocktail: Dissertation Diversion

A friend of mine here recently finished her dissertation, and we are going out tonight to celebrate. And by "celebrate," I mean "make her drink a lot of cocktails." So in her honor, I made y'all a little drink. It's the Old-Fashioned, which I find quite PhD-ified. Enjoy it with a pipe and a fabulous tweed jacket. And have a super old-fashioned weekend.

Please recommend a bourbon (or three) for this.

Alternatively, tell me to dewit and have a bourbon tasting.

Any of the Bs will do you right: Bulleit, Basil Hayden, Baker's, Booker. Also: HAVE A BOURBON TASTING.

I love a good Old Fashioned, makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Mad Men and Don Draper is giving me bedroom eyes.

My husband loves old-fashioneds! I prefer my bourbon unadulterated, though. No way am I cocking up my glass of Basil Hayden with a sugar cube, but I support his right to do so.

Another bourbon I'd suggest for them in the "inexpensive but delicious" category is Four Roses - it can often be found at BevMo anywhere from $16-$20. Elmer T. Lee and Eagle Rare are also nice and in the same price range as most of your Bs.

Whatever you do, do NOT make them with rotgut. It can't be shit bourbon, because you will still taste it.

Lastly, my husband doesn't like the sugar cube - if anyone else feels similarly, simple syrup works just as well.

@Heather, I'm not a huge fan of the sugar cube either, especially when I'm just making one for myself, so I use agave syrup. Works great.

Is this what Ryan Gosling makes in Crazy Stupid Love?

Based on what I know of poetry MFA's this would work equally as well for celebrating one of those!
